On Saturday July 5th 2008, Organization of Kenyans in Kansas City (OKKC) held its 2nd Annual Golf Tournament at Minor Park Golf Course in South Kansas City. Thomas Kanyingi was the winner of the tournament with a net score of 1 under Par 71. He won the tournament by 7 strokes. Bob Kendrick captured the 2nd place. His net score was 78. Fanson Kidwaro had a net score of 79, coming in a 3rd.
The tournament drew 16 players with a couple players coming from Chicago, IL. This tournament was sponsored by OKKC. Despite the challenges of securing sponsorship from local businesses, this year’s tournament was successful. After the tournament, the players had a Mexican fiesta at Dos Humbres Mexican Restaurant where the 1st and 2nd place awards where presented. While no one won the $20,000 Hole in One contest, Thomas Kanyingi hit his ball, rolling it to within 2 feet of the hole. No one aced any of the other Par 3 holes. The outing was geared towards supporting the OKKC Scholarship Fund, this fund when setup, will help Kenyan students with scholarship towards the ever raising tuition. More information about this fund will be available soon. A Fundraising dinner is scheduled for December this year. The golf tournament was special because it became part of the Kansas City Rugbyfest, an event that draws a lot of Kenyans and friends of Kenya from all over the country. This was the 5th Annual KC Rugbyfest, an event that included Rugby, Soccer, Basketball and now Golf. We are glad to be part of this tradition and hope to draw more Kenyans to the game of golf. The 1st OKKC Golf Outing was held back in 2006. This tournament will now be held every July 4th Weekend. We hope to attract more players and sponsors in the next tournament with a goal of helping the students with scholarships towards their education. |
